In a significant move towards healthier snacking options, three classic flavours of Doritos have been reformulated to meet non-high in fat, salt or sugar (non-HFSS) standards, according to recent statements. These flavours – Cool Original, Tangy Cheese, and Chilli Heatwave – now feature an enhanced recipe aimed at delivering a superior crunch and flavour while reducing salt and fat content by 24% and 15%, respectively.
The reformulation process incorporated more corn into the chips, adjusted the seasoning, and fine-tuned the cooking methodology. This endeavour results in Doritos that promise not only the crunchiest texture yet but also align with dietary health guidelines. The revamped chips are built on the thicker base used in the brand’s Dippers and Extra Flamin’ Hot varieties.
This updated range began appearing on UK supermarket shelves this week, with plans for nationwide availability in the imminent future. According to Robert Lowery, PepsiCo R&D senior director for UK foods, the effort to perfect Doritos’ trademark crunch has spanned years, involving teams in Leicester and Coventry.
Consumer feedback appears to support these changes, with the majority praising the bolder crunch and enhanced flavour profile. Lowery has indicated that the reformulated Doritos received positive assessments both from loyal fans and an expert panel of ‘supertasters.’
The reformulation initiative is bolstered by a £13 million investment at the Coventry facility, the home of Doritos in the UK for the past three decades. This financial commitment has enabled substantial upgrades, replacing a manufacturing line to accommodate the new production process, which involves stages from corn washing and milling to cutting and cooking.
The recent changes reflect PepsiCo’s commitment to innovation in snack foods, likely driven by consumer demand for healthier options without compromising on taste and texture. This holds potential to redefine expectations within the snack industry, signalling a forward-thinking approach to product development.
The enhanced Doritos are a step forward in balancing taste with health considerations, aligning PepsiCo’s offerings with modern consumer preferences. Such innovation underscores a dedication to evolving food standards, promising exciting developments in the snack sector.
