A significant mental health ‘expectation gap’ between employers and employees in the UK demands attention.
- 54% of employers claim they asked about mental health needs; only 15% of employees agree.
- 45% of employees value counselling services most, followed by mental health leave and workload reviews.
- There is a disconnect between offered benefits and employee awareness, with large gaps in perception.
- Improved communication between employers and employees is essential to bridge these gaps.
A recent study by Benenden Health reveals a concerning mental health ‘expectation gap’ between employers and employees in the United Kingdom. While 54% of employers believe they have enquired about their employees’ mental health needs, only a mere 15% of employees confirm being asked about their mental health requirements.
The study found that a significant 45% of employees stated that counselling services are the most valued provision, with mental health leave and regular workload reviews following closely behind at 40% and 32% respectively. Despite these preferences, there remains a misalignment between what mental health support is reportedly available and what employees recognise.
An illustrative example of this communication chasm is that 47% of employers claim to offer consistent workload reviews, yet only 14% of employees report receiving such support. This indicates a substantial gap in awareness of 33% of the provisions actually available to employees.
A similar disparity exists concerning mental health sick leave. Almost 44% of employers state they offer this benefit, while merely 19% of employees acknowledge its availability. This demonstrates a critical disconnect due to ineffective communication strategies within organisations.
Rebecca Mian, Director of People Services at Benenden Health, notes the importance of improving this dialogue. She suggests incorporating mental health questions into regular confidential employee surveys and promoting mental health discussions in appraisals and meetings. Jemma Williamson from Vita Health Group underscores the essential nature of openly addressing mental health needs to cultivate a positive work environment.
Strengthened communication strategies are imperative to closing the mental health support gap in the workplace.
