Inspired Global Cuisine (IGC) plans to establish a significant new food processing facility in Chadderton, which is expected to create a substantial number of local jobs. This development comes at a crucial time, following the loss of 350 jobs at the nearby Yodel distribution centre in Shaw. The proposed site on Lydia Becker Way will employ between 550 to 760 staff, with 200 roles specifically designated for local residents, having the potential to significantly boost local employment figures.
During a recent planning meeting, Councillor Peter Davies emphasised the value of planning in fostering job creation and economic development in the region. He stated, “This is why we have planning. It brings employment to the area, jobs… I’d like to thank them for investing in Oldham.” This initiative will enable IGC, known for its extensive range of over 150 product lines, to further expand its capabilities in producing ready meals, soups, and sauces by obtaining flexible use permissions.
The facility plans to operate around the clock, offering additional employment benefits and economic contributions to the area. The warehouse at 369 Lydia Becker Way will encompass more than 33,000 square metres of warehousing space and 10,000 square metres for office facilities, with over 300 parking spaces.
Oldham Council has unanimously approved the operation as a food distribution centre, although any structural changes will need a separate planning application. Despite the optimism around job creation, there is a single objection noted regarding potential noise and odour issues due to its proximity to Radclyffe School and residential areas.
The IGC spokesperson highlighted that the change of use will create approximately 550 jobs initially, primarily full-time positions, with about 300 being relocated from existing sites and around 200 expected to be new roles for local residents. Ultimately, the operation could provide up to 760 full-time equivalent jobs, underpinning its role as a significant local employer.
Inspired Global Cuisine’s new facility in Chadderton promises substantial employment benefits while addressing local economic needs.
