Recent research highlights a shift in the valuation of employee benefits among British workers.
- Supermarket vouchers have emerged as the most valued workplace perk, with 98% of employees using them.
- Many employees are turning to workplace benefits for dental services amid NHS service pressures.
- Salary advance options see significant engagement, yet less than a quarter of employers provide this perk.
- Despite being widely offered, gym memberships are utilised by a minority of employees.
Recent analysis of UK employee benefits data has shown a significant change in preference among British employees, who now consider supermarket vouchers as the most valued workplace perk. An impressive 98% of employees with access to these discounts actively use them to manage their weekly shopping expenses.
The research, conducted by Rippl, underscores the growing importance of practical benefits that address essential expenses. As the cost of living continues to rise, such tangible perks offer much-needed financial relief, with the average employee saving £725 annually through these vouchers.
In addition to supermarket discounts, there is a notable reliance on workplace benefits for dental services. With increasing demand and reduced availability of NHS appointments, 60% of employees are now seeking private dental support through employee benefits.
The popularity of salary advances is also on the rise, as more than three-quarters (78%) of employees have utilised this service in the past year to address urgent financial needs. However, this benefit remains underprovided, with less than 23% of employers offering it.
Interestingly, despite the widespread availability of gym memberships, with over 75% of employers providing them, only 8% of employees take advantage of this perk. This suggests a disconnect between offered benefits and employee preferences.
Chris Brown, CEO of Rippl, points out that the most appreciated perks are those offering meaningful support in daily life, assisting with essential expenses. Brown notes, “Retail and lifestyle discounts, such as supermarket vouchers, are an accessible way for employees to manage their everyday costs and for employers to show support without significant pay increases.”
To successfully attract and retain talent, employers must align their benefits with the genuine needs of their workforce.
