In a significant move to reduce environmental impact, Ocado has partnered with the UK Refill Coalition to introduce laundry essentials into its eco-conscious Reuse range. This initiative aims to tackle the pervasive problem of single-use plastic waste in grocery shopping.
From today, customers can purchase the Reuse Non-Bio Liquid Detergent and Reuse Clear Skies Fabric Conditioner, each in a 2.7-litre bottle, as part of their weekly Ocado shop. This expansion builds on the success of similar initiatives, such as the introduction of pasta and rice in reusable packaging earlier this year, which received high praise from consumers.
The response from Ocado’s eco-friendly offerings has been overwhelmingly positive, with products like pasta and rice receiving online ratings of 4.9 and 4.8 stars, respectively. Moreover, these items have achieved nearly a 30% sales share compared to their single-use counterparts. Regular returns of the reusable vessels underscore the growing public commitment to sustainability.
Research conducted by Ocado Retail and Savanta among over 2,000 participants indicates a clear consumer demand for sustainable shopping solutions. Approximately 72% of respondents expressed concern over the waste generated by single-use packaging, and one in three shoppers actively seek retailers offering refillable options for pantry staples.
The survey also reveals that 73% of customers desire more refillable options in supermarkets, with a particular emphasis on essential items like liquid laundry detergent and fabric conditioner. This consumer sentiment reflects a broader trend towards environmental awareness and sustainable living choices.
By expanding its Reuse range to include laundry essentials, Ocado is responding to increasing consumer demand for sustainable products. This move not only aligns with public sentiment but also positions Ocado at the forefront of the eco-friendly shopping trend, providing a model for other retailers to follow.
