Data from a well-regarded survey conducted by CCS McLays reveals that a substantial 86% of consumers hold food outlets responsible for ensuring that their deliveries arrive securely and without any signs of tampering. This expectation extends to demanding tamper-evident packaging, a standard that nearly half of the respondents wish to see implemented. The implications for retailers of not meeting these expectations can be severe, as 44% of British consumers indicate they would refrain from reordering following an unsatisfactory delivery experience. This sentiment is particularly strong among older consumers, where only a small percentage would consider giving a second chance to a provider.
Ian Hall, CEO of CCS McLays, emphasises the need for food outlets to maintain fundamental delivery standards. He states, “UK consumers are becoming increasingly unforgiving. Today, it’s about nailing the essentials – secure, fresh, tamper-free food deliveries. One slip-up, and they’re gone.” This remark is underscored by a YouGov survey of 2,000 Great Britain adults, highlighting that 55% harbour concerns about hygiene standards, with a notable proportion suspecting tampering issues, particularly among the younger demographic aged 18 to 24, where one in four express such concerns.
The survey uncovers additional frustrations such as inappropriate food temperature upon arrival, cited by 53% of participants, and issues with missing items affecting half of those surveyed. Incorrect orders and poor condition of the food further heighten consumer dissatisfaction, emphasising the multifaceted nature of the delivery service challenges faced.

The swift transition to an alternative provider upon dissatisfaction is facilitated by the plethora of available delivery options, underscoring the critical need for companies to consistently meet or exceed consumer expectations.
