In a significant development, Lidl has commenced its first Retail Leadership degree apprenticeship scheme, through collaboration with Kingston University.
The newly launched four-year programme aims to blend academic knowledge with practical retail experience. From over 5,000 applications, 51 school leavers have been chosen to participate in this innovative scheme. These apprentices will begin their journey with a starting salary of nearly £26,000, potentially increasing to £46,000 by their fourth year. They will undertake hands-on experience in various store operations, supplemented by regular visits to Kingston University and the company’s headquarters to deepen their understanding of the retail sector.
In parallel, the discount retailer has also introduced 50 new participants to its annual graduate scheme. This scheme offers a rotational experience across multiple sectors such as human resources, warehousing, store management, and supply chain operations. According to Stephanie Rogers, Lidl GB’s chief human resources officer, the partnership with Kingston University marks a substantial milestone for the company, coinciding with its 30th anniversary in Great Britain. She expressed her excitement in welcoming over 100 talented individuals through both schemes and emphasized Lidl’s dedication to nurturing the future leaders of the retail industry.
Professor Sanka Sivarajah, Head of Kingston Business School, reiterated the importance of this partnership, highlighting the pressing need for skill development within the industry. He stated that the apprenticeship would furnish students with essential competences, including digital insights into retail marketing and financial skills, necessary for competent management within a large organisation.
This collaborative venture between Lidl and Kingston University marks a forward-thinking approach to skill development in the retail industry, paving the way for a new generation of retail leaders.
