Paramount Global has announced its commitment to invest in a state-of-the-art MediCinema at the Manchester Royal Infirmary as part of its ongoing legacy initiative associated with the MTV EMAs. The company has decided to allocate part of the proceeds from ticket sales at the Co-op Live event to aid in funding this innovative space.
Each year, the MTV EMAs leave a positive mark on the host city, striving for an impact that endures beyond the celebration of music. According to Lee Sears, President of International Markets Advertising Sales at Paramount Global, the goal is to engage with local communities effectively and meaningfully.
MediCinema, a charity that has been constructing and overseeing cinemas within hospitals for over two decades, is collaborating with Paramount to bring this vision to life. These cinemas are thoughtfully designed to accommodate hospital beds, wheelchairs, and necessary medical equipment, providing no-cost entertainment for patients and their families.
Kathy Cowell OBE DL, Chairman of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, emphasised that such facilities offer significant relief. She noted that the planned cinema at Oxford Road Campus will serve as a crucial respite for patients and their families, allowing them to temporarily escape the challenges of a hospital environment.
In a show of gratitude, Colin Lawrence, CEO of MediCinema, expressed appreciation for the support received from Paramount Global. This partnership exemplifies commitment to improving patient well-being and enhancing the hospital experience by creating a joyful, immersive environment for visitors.
The cinema will also serve a dual purpose, functioning as an enhanced educational facility for staff training when not in use as a cinema. This initiative will be accessible to patients across several hospitals within the Manchester healthcare system, including the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and Saint Mary’s Hospital.
Construction on the project is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2026, with its completion anticipated by the end of that year. This development promises not only entertainment but also a transformed venue that supports both healing and learning within the hospital setting.
This MediCinema partnership highlights how entertainment and healthcare sectors can unite to significantly improve patient experiences.
