Lidl plans to invest £21 billion in the United Kingdom’s food industry by the end of 2024. This marks a significant increase from its initial five-year commitment of £15 billion, reflecting a 40% rise. This substantial financial commitment underscores Lidl’s ongoing support for British agriculture. In the previous year alone, the discount retailer invested approximately £5 billion across various sectors to bolster British farming. Two-thirds of Lidl’s products in its permanent range are sourced from British suppliers, ensuring that customers can rely on quality, locally sourced items. All fresh everyday milk, butter, eggs, cream, pork, chicken, and beef available at Lidl are entirely British-sourced.
In an effort to further strengthen its ties with British agriculture, Lidl is launching the Grassroots Farming Conference in February. This initiative aims to enhance relationships with farmers and tackle critical issues within the sector. The conference will feature a range of key topics, including agricultural policy and mental health, covered by notable speakers such as Alex Burrows, Chair of NACFT; Michael Kavanagh, Director of Green Farm Collective; and Stephanie Berkeley from the Farm Safety Foundation.
Richard Bourns, Lidl GB’s Chief Commercial Officer, reflected on the company’s 30-year history in Great Britain, noting the strong relationships with local suppliers that have developed over the years. Bourns stated, “One of the things we’re most proud of are the strong relationships we’ve built with British suppliers, who have grown with us over the years.” He emphasised Lidl’s commitment to continuing support for British farmers, ensuring the availability of quality, home-grown food on Lidl shelves nationwide.
Lidl’s increased financial commitment is set to significantly impact British agriculture, ensuring it remains a key player in supporting local farmers and suppliers.
