Lidl has announced its first-ever Retail Leadership degree apprenticeship scheme, developed in collaboration with Kingston University. This initiative, which marries academic study with practical experience, underscores a significant step in developing new talent within the retail sector.
The four-year programme has already sparked considerable interest, receiving over 5,000 applications from school leavers, with 51 apprentices being selected to participate. These individuals will embark on a journey that starts with a salary of nearly £26,000, with the potential to earn up to £46,000 by their fourth year.
Participants will gain invaluable hands-on experience directly in-store while also attending regular sessions at Kingston University and Lidl’s head office, Lidl House. This blend of practical and academic learning is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the retail industry.
Amidst this groundbreaking initiative, Lidl has also welcomed 50 graduates into its annual scheme, who will rotate across various roles, including human resources, warehouse, store operations, and supply chain management. This intake exemplifies Lidl’s commitment to nurturing new talent.
Stephanie Rogers, Lidl GB’s chief human resources officer, expressed her enthusiasm about the new opportunities, stating, “I’m thrilled to welcome over 100 talented individuals to Lidl GB through these programmes. Our partnership with Kingston University for the Retail Leadership apprenticeship is a significant milestone, and it’s exciting to see it come to life in our 30th year of operating in Great Britain.”
Kingston University’s Professor Sanka Sivarajah highlighted the programme’s role in addressing the skills gap in the industry. He noted, “There is a real need for skills development, with challenges for industries to overcome and this approach to knowledge partnerships bridges that gap. The apprenticeship will equip students with the competencies and skills they need for the future.”
This collaboration between Lidl and Kingston University represents a forward-thinking approach to retail education, aiming to equip the next generation with the skills necessary to thrive in a dynamic industry.
