BAE Systems is making a significant move to enhance the UK’s defence industry by establishing a new £25m artillery development and production facility in Sheffield. This investment is expected to create 50 skilled jobs, supporting both local employment and national defence capabilities.
The facility, spanning 94,000 square feet, will be at the forefront of artillery expertise. It is crucial for delivering BAE Systems’ M777 lightweight towed howitzer manufacturing capability. This aligns with government efforts to revitalise and sustain vital UK artillery operations, ensuring a robust defence infrastructure.
John Borton, Managing Director of BAE Systems’ Weapons Systems UK, emphasised the long-term vision: “Our aim is to deliver long-term artillery capabilities for the UK, which will safeguard, sustain and grow a critical, specialised British industrial capability as well as provide important opportunities for exports.” This statement highlights BAE’s commitment to maintaining an adaptable and highly skilled workforce.
The construction at the Sheffield site is already in progress, with an operational target set for 2025. Local MP Clive Betts acknowledged Sheffield’s significant role in the engineering landscape, stating the new artillery facility will enhance the city’s contribution to both economic prosperity and national security.
BAE Systems’ Sheffield project is one piece of a larger investment puzzle, which includes a £300m transformation of shipbuilding facilities in Glasgow, a £200m upgrade in the munitions business, and a £220m factory development in Rochester, Kent.
The new Sheffield facility marks a strategic step forward for BAE Systems, strengthening both local employment and the UK’s defence capabilities.
