Co-op has set a new precedent in the UK convenience retail sector by implementing improved chicken welfare standards across its British Breaded and Ready-To-Eat range.
By rebranding 21 product lines under the Space to Thrive initiative, Co-op is prioritising high welfare conditions that surpass typical UK standards. This includes providing chickens with 20% more space, allowing access to naturally lit barns and ensuring they have pecking objects and platforms for perching. Such enhancements enable more natural behaviours, contributing to healthier poultry.
Co-op’s transition to lower stocking density facilities for its entire breaded chicken line follows a significant investment move that began with its fresh chicken products in February. The changes reflect a reduction in maximum stocking density from 38kg/m² to 30kg/m², aligning with the retailer’s commitment to responsible sourcing and support for British farmers.
Sinead Bell, Co-op’s commercial director, emphasised the importance of animal welfare and responsible sourcing. She stated, “Responsible sourcing matters to us, our members and customers and we’re proud to support British farmers by sourcing 100% of our fresh meat and shell eggs from trusted farms from across Britain.” Bell underlined the company’s dedication to offering high-quality products while maintaining value, highlighting Co-op’s rare position in reducing stocking density beyond fresh chicken lines.
Co-op’s initiative marks a significant step in advancing animal welfare standards within convenience retail, setting a benchmark for others in the industry.
