Co-op is pioneering improved welfare standards for chicken, setting a new precedent in the UK convenience retail sector.
In a significant move, Co-op has established itself as the first UK convenience retailer to apply enhanced chicken welfare standards across its entire British Breaded and Ready-To-Eat range. This initiative comprises 21 product lines, including British Breaded Chicken Goujons and British Garlic Kiev, all now featured under the Space to Thrive range.
These chickens are subject to welfare conditions surpassing the standard UK requirements, featuring reduced stocking density and 20% additional space. Moreover, they are reared in naturally lit barns and have access to pecking objects and perching platforms, promoting natural behaviours and healthier living conditions.
In February, Co-op had already transitioned its fresh chicken range to these lower stocking density facilities, marking a significant shift supported by a multi-million-pound investment. This latest development extends these standards to breaded chicken as well, aiming to provide a better quality of life for the poultry.
Sinead Bell, Co-op’s commercial director, highlighted the importance of responsible sourcing and supporting British farmers by ensuring that all fresh meat and shell eggs are sourced from trusted British farms. According to Bell, “We take animal welfare seriously and listen to our member owners, which is why we took action earlier this year and continued to significantly invest in our poultry supply chain.”
The chickens and the 11 Ready-To-Eat lines are now bred to a maximum stocking density of 30kg/m2, reduced from the previous 38kg/m2. This change underscores Co-op’s commitment to animal welfare, extending beyond fresh chicken.
This initiative is a reflection of the retailer’s dedication to better practices in meat production, aligning with the growing consumer interest in ethical sourcing and sustainability.
Co-op’s strategic decision to enhance chicken welfare demonstrates its leadership in ethical retail practices and sets a significant benchmark for others in the industry.
