The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has issued a call to action for the public to unite against the escalating violence and abuse toward retail workers as the festive season approaches. Recent findings from the BRC’s crime survey reveal an alarming surge in such incidents, with reported cases soaring to 1,300 daily.
The BRC’s survey highlights a concerning rise in violence and abuse faced by retail workers, including threats involving weapons, physical assaults, and racial slurs. This surge has prompted calls for action from retailers and government officials alike. With delivery drivers experiencing heightened abuse and facing an even busier season, measures such as equipping them with personal safety devices and DNA spit testing kits are being implemented to ensure their protection.
The BRC is also urging the government to expedite the introduction of a standalone offence specifically targeting acts of assault, threats, or abuse against retail workers. This legislation aims to extend protections to all individuals in consumer-facing roles. Helen Dickinson, BRC’s chief executive, stated, “As the clock runs down to Christmas, retail colleagues will be working extra hard to look after customers, helping them find what they need, keeping shelves stocked, and delivering gifts. Any mistreatment of our colleagues will not be tolerated. It is vital that the government sends a clear message and ensures the new standalone offence applies to all consumer-facing roles in retail.”
In a parallel development, Deliveroo has launched its ‘Right to Ride Safely’ campaign, which advocates for enhanced protections for delivery riders within the framework of the upcoming Crime and Policing Bill. Camilla Kater, Senior Vice President of Rider Care at Deliveroo, remarked, “Delivery riders work very hard during the festive season, supporting restaurants and shops across the UK. We’re urging the government to include delivery riders in the standalone offence for assaulting or threatening a retail worker.” This campaign underscores the broader need for comprehensive protective measures across the entire retail and delivery sector.
As the festive season brings increased demands on retail and delivery staff, the call for public support and governmental action against workplace abuse becomes crucial. Ensuring the safety and dignity of those serving the public during this busy period is an imperative shared by industry leaders and advocacy groups.
