As Christmas approaches, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and its members urge the public to address the increasing incidents of violence against retail workers. With violent confrontations reaching alarming levels, it is imperative to realise the human impact of these actions and take a stand against them.
According to the BRC’s latest crime survey, violent incidents involving retail staff have surged to an unprecedented 1,300 cases daily. These alarming figures include cases involving weapons, physical assaults, and racial abuse, underscoring the urgent need for action. The BRC emphasises that the festive season amplifies the challenges faced by retail and delivery workers, who often bear the brunt of customer frustrations.
The rising abuse against delivery drivers is of particular concern, with many already facing threats and physical violence. During this busy time of year, these individuals play a crucial role in ensuring that goods reach consumers. Consequently, measures such as personal safety devices and DNA spit testing kits have been implemented to protect them.
The BRC is advocating for the quick enactment of legislation to make assaulting, threatening, or abusing retail workers a standalone offence. This legislative move aims to extend protection to all individuals in consumer-facing roles, helping to create a safer working environment this holiday season.
Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the BRC, reiterates the importance of supporting retail workers. She stresses, “As the clock runs down to Christmas, retail colleagues will be working extra hard to look after customers, helping them find what they need, keeping shelves stocked, and delivering gifts to people’s homes. While Christmas is an exceptionally busy time, any mistreatment of our colleagues will not be tolerated, and we ask the public to stand with us in the fight against retail crime.”
Deliveroo has also joined in this call for enhanced protection, particularly for delivery riders who are integral to festive logistics. Camilla Kater, the senior vice president of rider care at Deliveroo, highlights the need for safety measures to also include delivery riders. “We’re urging the government through our Right to Ride Safely campaign to ensure the standalone offence for assaulting or threatening a retail worker also includes delivery riders given the vital role they play in the industry,” states Kater.
It is crucial for both the public and government to recognise the indispensable service retail workers provide and to take definitive steps to ensure their safety. This holiday season should be marked by kindness and respect towards those who facilitate the festive celebrations.
