Anna Hall, a renowned filmmaker and BAFTA award recipient, has been appointed as an honorary professor at the University of Salford. Hall, who has spent almost 30 years in the documentary film industry, will leverage her extensive experience to benefit the university’s MA Documentary Production for TV, Film and Digital Media course.
As the Chief Creative Officer and founder of Candour Productions, Hall has crafted influential documentaries such as ‘Libby, Are You Home Yet?’, which secured her a BAFTA in 2023. This particular series delves into the tragic disappearance and murder of University student Libby Squire, showcasing Hall’s ability to address sensitive topics with care and respect.
During her visit to the University’s MediaCity campus, Hall engaged with students, discussing the nuances of ethical documentary filmmaking. She emphasised the importance of treating contributors with integrity while navigating challenging legal landscapes.
Expressing her optimism for future filmmakers, Hall stated, ‘I feel very encouraged about the next generation of fantastic documentary makers coming out of Salford!’ Her enthusiasm is mirrored by Maire Tracey, the programme leader, who expressed excitement over Hall’s involvement, describing it as a significant opportunity for students.
Hall’s career is marked by groundbreaking projects like ‘Edge of the City’ and ‘The Hunt for Britain’s Sex Gangs’, which have garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards. Beyond BAFTA, she has been recognised with Broadcast, Royal Television Society, and Grierson Award nominations, featuring notably as the recipient of the Grierson Trustees Award in 2023.
One of her recent acclaimed works, ‘The Push: Murder on the Cliff’, aired on Channel 4, where she served as both series director and executive producer. The series, detailing a controversial murder trial in Edinburgh, was praised for its insightful storytelling and has further cemented Hall’s status as an influential figure in documentary filmmaking.
