Majestic is anticipating a remarkable rise in Champagne sales this December, with their forecast suggesting a bottle will be sold every five seconds throughout the month.
The prediction comes as the specialist wine retailer expects brands exclusive to Majestic, such as Boizel, Bouvet, and Cattier, to grow in popularity over the next two weeks. Historically, approximately 40% of annual Champagne sales occur in November and December, underscoring this seasonal surge.
In addition to Champagne, Majestic foresees robust sales in Rosé, English wines, orange wines, and selections from regions like Greece. This year marks a significant moment for Rosé, as the retailer experienced its most successful December for this variety in 2023, with an anticipated 25% increase in sales this year.
Meanwhile, the company predicts a 33% growth in sales of English still wines compared to the previous year, while Greek wines are set to see sales double compared to the same period last year. Orange wines are also attracting attention, with sales expected to double as consumers explore alternative options.
Majestic is offering free wine tastings at all 212 stores across England, Scotland, Wales, and Jersey, providing expert advice to help customers make informed choices. The intention is to encourage patrons to explore diverse wine categories during the festive season.
Elizabeth Newman, Majestic’s Chief Commercial Officer, notes that although Champagne remains a popular choice for celebratory occasions, there is a growing interest in non-traditional wine categories. ‘Our customers are increasingly adventurous with their drink choices, and the Christmas and New Year period is a perfect time to surprise friends and family with something different,’ she said. Wines from lesser-known regions, such as Greece and Hungary, are expected to be particularly appealing, along with the emerging trend of pairing orange wines with Christmas turkey.
As December unfolds, Majestic’s predictions highlight a shifting palette among consumers, with a blend of traditional and contemporary wine choices shaping holiday celebrations.
