In a strategic move, Chapel Down has announced the appointment of James Pennefather, former CEO of The Lakes Distillery, as its new chief executive, following the resignation of Andrew Carter in September.
Chapel Down, the prominent English wine producer, is set to welcome James Pennefather as the new CEO starting February 2025. Pennefather’s extensive experience in the premium drinks industry includes leadership roles at William Grant & Sons and Diageo, with a notable achievement being his recent facilitation of The Lakes Distillery’s acquisition by The Nyetimber Group.
Martin Glenn, Chairman of Chapel Down, expressed confidence in Pennefather’s ability to foster growth and enhance the company’s brand presence within emerging markets, leveraging his expertise in premium drink brand development and global customer relations.
The transition occurs amid Chapel Down’s challenging times, as the company had recently retracted its sale plans, lowering sales forecasts due to difficulties with its harvest, causing a decline in its share price.
Pennefather expressed enthusiasm for joining the company at a pivotal time, aiming to drive transformational growth for both customers and shareholders, while acknowledging the strong legacy left by his predecessor, Andrew Carter.
In addition to the leadership change in the CEO position, Chapel Down is also witnessing a shift in its financial leadership. The company’s Chief Financial Director, Robert Smith, has announced his resignation effective April, two years after his appointment in March 2022. The search for his successor is anticipated to begin soon.
The appointment of James Pennefather marks a new chapter for Chapel Down as it navigates its future amidst market challenges, with leadership determined to steer the company towards continued success.
