In a landmark development, Sainsbury’s has inaugurated its first airport store at Edinburgh Airport, marking a significant enhancement in the food, drink, and shopping experience for travellers.
This new convenience store, strategically located before security, is accessible to both arriving and departing passengers at Edinburgh Airport. It operates 24 hours a day, ensuring round-the-clock service for all travellers.
The store promises a wide array of offerings, from meal deals to fresh bread and cakes baked daily. It further includes a variety of fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, and ready-to-eat meals. Additionally, a specialised section dedicated to Scottish products presents locally sourced favourites, catering specifically to those seeking a taste of Scotland.
A notable feature is the introduction of a Click & Collect service. This allows customers to order items online from Sainsbury’s as well as Habitat and Tu Clothing, ready for collection at the airport store, enhancing convenience for the busy traveller.
Staffed by a team of 26 colleagues, the new store is also part of Sainsbury’s initiative in partnership with Neighbourly, a surplus food redistribution service. This collaboration enables food donations to local charities, reflecting the company’s commitment to supporting the community.
Sainsbury’s director of property, procurement and EV Ventures expressed enthusiasm about this new venture, highlighting the ambition to replicate the success of other travel hub stores such as those in UK train stations. Feedback from customers will be keenly observed to further refine and expand this model across other UK airports.
This opening coincides with a broader trend among major UK supermarkets, who are actively expanding their convenience store networks. This strategy reflects a bid to capture the attention of local shoppers while investing in real estate to strengthen their market presence.
The launch of Sainsbury’s first airport store at Edinburgh Airport is a clear indication of the retailer’s innovative approach to enhancing traveller convenience and supporting local communities. This forward-thinking move not only broadens the shopping options for passengers but also sets a precedent for future expansions in travel-focused retailing.
