Kromek, a pioneering firm in radiation detection technology, has been awarded a substantial £2 million contract by the Ministry of Defence. This deal is a result of a competitive tender process, marking a significant achievement for the Sedgefield-based company. The agreement demands the supply of nuclear radiation detectors and related products within the current financial year ending in April 2025.
The D5 RIID, Kromek’s handheld gamma and neutron detector, is central to this contract. Additionally, Kromek will provide its newly launched Alpha Beta probe attachment, which significantly enhances the D5 RIID’s capability by enabling detection of alpha and beta radiation. This innovative technology is a testament to Kromek’s commitment to advancing national defence initiatives.
Dr Arnab Basu, the CEO of Kromek, expressed delight over this achievement, highlighting that the rigorous tender process reflects confidence in the company’s advanced solutions. ‘We are proud to provide the MOD with our latest technology so soon after its launch,’ said Dr Basu. This partnership further cements Kromek’s role in supporting the United Kingdom’s defence infrastructure.
This contract follows Kromek’s inclusion in the UK Government Resilience Framework two months prior. Under this framework, Kromek’s D3M detector was identified as the Personal Radiation Detector of choice. Such recognition reaffirms the company’s influence and contribution towards enhancing the UK’s resilience against public safety threats.
As Kromek continues to expand its technological frontiers, its collaboration with the MOD signifies a strategic alignment with national security priorities. This partnership is expected to strengthen over the coming years, bringing advanced detection solutions to the fore.
Kromek’s contract with the MOD not only strengthens its market position but also reinforces its role in the UK’s national defence strategy.
