Virgin Media O2 is making a strategic investment in Manchester by establishing a new state-of-the-art office space in the city’s centre. This move, planned for late next year, is part of Virgin Media O2’s commitment to maintaining a strong presence in Manchester as the company looks to transition from its current Wythenshawe location, whose lease expires in early 2026. A thorough evaluation of property options within 10 miles of Manchester led to the selection of Island, a net-zero carbon space, as the preferred site.
Island is developed by HBD, in partnership with Greater Manchester Pensions Fund. The workspace will feature an array of amenities designed to support both productivity and sustainability. Employees will benefit from easy access to transport links, extensive bicycle storage, shower facilities, and varied food and drink options, alongside communal spaces such as a rooftop terrace. The site is targeting an Excellent BREEAM Sustainable Building Certification, attributed to its green technologies, which include centralised air handling units, demand-controlled CO2 sensors, solar panels, real-time energy monitoring, and energy-efficient lighting and lifts.
The office move is designed to support Virgin Media O2’s flexible working strategies, providing a modern space that encourages in-person collaboration among employees. Particular teams, including customer service experts, will be among the first to transfer, continuing their specialised support in areas such as sales, retentions, and telecare. The transition aims to give employees a superior working environment while reducing the company’s overall carbon footprint.
The decision to choose Island for this new office underscores Virgin Media O2’s dedication to Manchester, reinforcing the company’s long-term investments since their initial move to Wythenshawe in 1991. Emphasis will be placed on a smooth transition for Wythenshawe-based employees, with clear communication and support throughout the process.
Patricia Cobian, Virgin Media O2’s Chief Financial Officer, emphasised the move’s significance, noting that the new office not only maintains the company’s substantial presence in Manchester but also places Virgin Media O2 at the heart of the city’s technology hub. She stated, “The state-of-the-art office will provide a vibrant space for our employees in the North West to get together in person and collaborate, meeting our needs now and helping attract future talent.” She highlighted the importance of improving employees’ experiences and environmental sustainability, supported by the location’s excellent transport connections.
This strategic move by Virgin Media O2 reflects its commitment to sustainability and employee engagement, ensuring a productive future in Manchester.
