- Ocado aims to address the gender gap in entrepreneurship within the UK.
Ocado, a notable player in the online grocery market, has initiated a campaign titled ‘Buy Women Built’, which is designed to put a spotlight on products created and developed by female entrepreneurs. This campaign will be featured prominently across Ocado’s digital platforms including its app, website, and through a dedicated ‘Inspire Me’ tab.
The campaign, propelled by the efforts of Sahar Hashemi, the founder of Coffee Republic, aims to enhance the visibility of female-founded businesses. Hashemi has been instrumental in advocating for this initiative, highlighting its importance in bridging the gender gap in entrepreneurship. “Confidence is a huge issue — women don’t feel they’ve got what it takes,” Hashemi stated, emphasising the need to inspire future generations by showcasing successful women-led brands.
Ocado has meticulously curated a collection of 130 brands owned by women entrepreneurs. This includes well-established names like Little Moons ice cream as well as burgeoning start-ups such as All Dressed Up sauces. With the introduction of this initiative, Ocado is not only expanding its product range but also giving a platform to brands that may not have been available in its marketplace before.
The context for this initiative stems from the concerning statistic that the United Kingdom lags behind other developed countries by up to 30% in female entrepreneurship. By promoting these products, Ocado is helping to address this disparity, fostering an environment where women entrepreneurs can thrive. This initiative draws parallels to past efforts by the company to promote the consumption of British-grown food, further cementing Ocado’s commitment to targeted promotional campaigns that support specific communities.
Ocado’s ‘Buy Women Built’ initiative marks a significant step towards supporting female entrepreneurs and addressing the gender gap in the UK business landscape.
