The role of high sheriff is one of the oldest secular positions in the United Kingdom, dating back over a thousand years to Saxon times. Appointed by the crown, this non-political, unpaid role involves supporting the judiciary and promoting law and order. Professor Malik’s appointment is not only historic but significant in representing diversity in this ancient office.
Malik has expressed profound honour in serving her home county, West Yorkshire. She aims to recognise and support those committed to crime prevention and enhancing community welfare. “It is an enormous honour to take on this important role. I look forward to serving my home county and meeting the many different people who do so much good for West Yorkshire,” she remarked.
Born to Pakistani immigrants in Bradford, Malik’s career spans over three decades at the QED Foundation, where she has championed social and economic opportunities for disadvantaged communities. Her work across Whitehall and various public bodies highlights her dedication to integrating ethnic minorities into mainstream British society.
Dr Mohammed Ali OBE, CEO of the QED Foundation, celebrated Malik’s appointment as a pivotal step towards inclusivity. He remarked, “Adeeba’s appointment as the first ethnic minority woman high sheriff for Yorkshire is a great example of that.”
