- Grapes, apples, and pears at Leckford Estate are grown in harmony with nature.
- Waitrose aims to expand its sustainability efforts by establishing a Centre of Excellence.
- This initiative forms part of Waitrose’s ongoing journey towards environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
Waitrose’s Leckford Estate has become the first in the UK to receive regenerative agricultural certification from Regenified, a global leader in sustainable farming validation. This landmark achievement highlights the supermarket’s dedication to the environment by employing methods that prioritise ecological balance in the cultivation of grapes, apples, and pears.
Such a certification recognises farming methodologies that align with natural processes, reducing environmental impact and enhancing biodiversity. Waitrose’s ambition does not end here; the grocer plans to develop a permanent Centre of Excellence at Leckford. This centre will serve as a hub for providing tools, workshops, and resources to assist other farmers transitioning to regenerative approaches.
Andrew Hoad, head of Leckford Estate, expressed pride in the estate’s accomplishment, stating, “We are incredibly proud to be the first vineyard and orchard in the UK to achieve Regenified’s certification.” He emphasised that Waitrose believes high-quality production and environmental care can coexist, advancing their regenerative farming journey.
Waitrose has actively been shifting towards beneficial agricultural practices. Earlier collaborations include working with a regenerative farming bakery and introducing a farmhouse loaf made from nature-friendly wheat cultivated at Leckford Estate. The supermarket is steadfast in this path and continued collaborations.
Jake Pickering, Waitrose’s senior agriculture manager, has assured that despite these advances, consumer food prices would remain unaffected. “We can deliver this while being the very best value in the market,” he affirmed, emphasising that environmental sustainability need not compromise affordability.
Waitrose’s pioneering efforts in regenerative agriculture signify a meaningful shift towards sustainable practices in the UK supermarket industry.
