Boots has officially announced Anthony Hemmerdinger as its new Managing Director for the UK and Ireland, effective from November 4th. His appointment comes as the company seeks to continue its momentum in the evolving retail landscape.
Hemmerdinger has served as the Retail and Operations Director at Boots since 2022. He boasts a formidable resume with more than three decades of experience in the UK retail sector. As part of Boots’ leadership team, his strategic input has been crucial in steering the company through a significant transformation.
During his tenure, Hemmerdinger has been instrumental in driving Boots’ substantial beauty re-fit and brand expansion programmes across its stores. His efforts have also greatly enhanced the delivery of healthcare and beauty services within the company, solidifying its position in the market.
Before joining Boots, Hemmerdinger was the Chief Operating Officer at Asda, where he led the UK retail business for six years. His career also includes senior strategic roles at Sainsbury’s and Carphone Warehouse, and a lengthy 17-year stint at M&S. These roles have equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of the retail industry, which he brings to his new position at Boots.
Boots emphasised that Hemmerdinger’s appointment followed a meticulous search process, scrutinising both external and internal candidates to find the most suitable leader. His diverse experience and proven track record made him a standout choice.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Hemmerdinger remarked, ‘Boots is a terrific business that holds a unique position at the heart of the UK’s health and beauty sector, and I am extremely proud of all we have achieved over the last few years.’
Seb James, the outgoing Managing Director, announced his departure following the decision by Boots’ parent company, Walgreens, to shelve plans for a significant sale. Under his leadership, the company notably revitalised its beauty sector by integrating numerous new brands and expanding its pharmacy offerings.
In response to his appointment, Hemmerdinger expressed eagerness to collaborate with Ornella Barra and the broader team to further the company’s ambitious strategy and continue its current momentum. He also thanked Seb James for his support and leadership during the transition period.
Anthony Hemmerdinger’s extensive retail experience and successful track record make him a well-suited leader to guide Boots in its next phase of growth.
