Aldi is implementing significant reductions in plastic packaging across its savoury product lines to lessen its environmental impact.
The supermarket giant will eliminate “unnecessary plastic packaging” from several of its savoury goods. Specifically, it will replace plastic windows with cardboard in its Specially Selected pies and quiches and will introduce cardboard packaging for Crestwood frittatas and quiches. Furthermore, plastic trays will be removed from Crestwood twin slices and pork pies. Customers will notice these new packaging solutions in stores starting 27 November, with the initiative expected to cut down 127 tonnes of unnecessary plastic annually once fully operational.
Luke Emery, Aldi’s plastics and packaging director, stated: “We are constantly reviewing ways to become a more sustainable supermarket, and reducing unnecessary plastic packaging is just another example of the progress we’re making. We know our customers care about our environmental commitments just as much as we do, and we hope these changes help make their daily shop more sustainable.”
In addition, in August, Aldi initiated trials to remove pulp trays and punnets from various fruit and vegetable products. This move is part of a broader industry trend towards reducing plastic waste, as demonstrated by a recent proposal from the anti-waste charity Wrap, which suggested a government ban on plastic packaging for 21 fresh produce items in UK supermarkets.
Aldi’s initiative to reduce plastic packaging represents a forward-thinking approach to sustainability, aligning with a wider industry push towards reducing environmental impact.
