The collaboration with packaging experts Mondi has resulted in a paper envelope that features a lightweight, shock-proof lining. This advancement eliminates the need for plastic bubble wrap, enabling customers to recycle the envelopes at home easily. Amazon has emphasised that the new design does not compromise safety or functionality.
Customers have already begun receiving packages in these envelopes. According to Amazon, the lightweight packaging reduces the average shipment weight by 44 grams compared to equivalent-sized cardboard boxes. This reduction not only optimises space but also eliminates the necessity for additional packaging materials like paper dunnage.
Amazon has stated that the demand for “rightsized, recyclable packaging that minimises waste” is increasing among customers. In scenarios where plastic-free options aren’t entirely feasible, they aim to optimise packaging type, material, and weight to improve circularity, avoid waste, and reduce carbon emissions while maintaining safety and functionality.
Thais Blumer, the European head of sustainable packaging at Amazon, highlighted the challenges overcome to replace traditional bubble-wrap envelopes with fully recyclable paper options. Blumer stated, “Achieving both low weight and maximum protection with a 100% recyclable paper envelope was not an easy task.” However, these envelopes are designed to be easy to pack and recycle at home, ensuring damage-free deliveries.
