- The partnership follows a dispute between Tony’s Chocolonely and Lidl over similar chocolate designs.
- Aldi commits to sustainable cocoa sourcing, supporting Ghanaian and Ivorian farmers.
- The Choco Changer aims to promote responsible cocoa production in line with Tony’s Open Chain principles.
- Aldi’s goal is for all its cocoa products to be sustainably sourced by 2025.
Aldi has reintroduced its own-brand chocolate bar, the Choco Changer, by partnering with the sustainable chocolate brand Tony’s Chocolonely. This collaboration comes after Tony’s Chocolonely criticised Lidl for producing a chocolate bar with a similar design, drawing attention to the lack of equivalent ethical sourcing principles. The Choco Changer, available as a Specialbuy at a price of £2.25, signifies a renewed commitment to ethical production.
The Choco Changer utilises cocoa sourced through Tony’s Open Chain, which is structured around five sourcing principles to ensure 100% responsible sourcing. A key aspect of this partnership is the commitment to pay a Living Income Reference Price, ensuring that farmers in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire can earn a sustainable income from their cocoa production. This initiative aligns with Aldi’s ongoing commitment to sustainable sourcing through its Fairly Traded policy.
Aldi aims to have all cocoa in its own-label products in the UK and Ireland certified by renowned sustainability bodies, such as Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, or Cocoa Horizons, by 2025. This initiative underscores Aldi’s dedication to transforming supply chains to support ethical practices globally.
Liz Fox, Aldi’s national sustainability director, expressed enthusiasm for this collaboration, highlighting its potential to provide customers with products that are both delicious and ethically responsible. Fox noted, “We’re delighted to be collaborating once again with Tony’s Open Chain to provide Aldi customers with chocolate that is equally delicious and ethical.”
In response to the competition from Lidl, Tony’s Chocolonely representatives have emphasised the importance of maintaining ethical standards in the chocolate industry. Sanne van Zon-Arts, head of sales for Tony’s Open Chain, remarked on the ongoing partnership with Aldi as a pioneering force for good in the industry, stating that this collaboration demonstrates a shared commitment to enhancing global supply chains.
Aldi, in collaboration with Tony’s Chocolonely, is setting a standard in the chocolate industry for sustainable and ethical sourcing practices.
