Major UK supermarkets, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, and Aldi, have initiated recalls of specific pastry items amid concerns that they may be contaminated with metal and plastic fragments. The products, which include popular items such as sausage rolls, steak and ale pies, steak slices, and cheese & onion rolls, are deemed potentially unsafe for consumption.
The recall affects 20 product ranges, all supplied by Compleat Food Group, which detected the contamination through one of their metal detectors. Following this discovery, the company promptly issued a recall notice via the Food Standards Authority.
Shoppers who have purchased any of the affected items are encouraged to return them to stores for a full refund. No proof of purchase is necessary, ensuring consumer convenience and safety.
In response to the incident, a representative from Compleat Food Group stated, ‘The affected lines were immediately shut down while an internal investigation took place.’ After addressing the issue, operations have resumed as normal.
Both Tesco and Sainsbury’s have issued public statements reinforcing their commitment to customer safety and apologising for the inconvenience caused. Tesco highlighted the potential risk posed by the contamination, while Sainsbury’s emphasised that the recall is a precautionary measure.
The precautionary recall demonstrates the supermarkets’ commitment to consumer safety and their swift response to potential health risks.
