Sainsbury’s introduces a groundbreaking initiative to combat plastic waste and reduce carbon emissions.
- Cardboard cartons replace traditional plastic in Sainsbury’s own-brand liquid laundry detergent.
- The new packaging is set to save 22 tonnes of plastic annually across all stores.
- Sainsbury’s aims to cut carbon emissions by 50% through this transition.
- This move aligns with the company’s broader goal to halve plastic usage by 2025.
In a pioneering move for sustainability, Sainsbury’s has launched its own-brand liquid laundry detergent in innovative cardboard cartons. By transitioning away from conventional sleeved plastic bottles, the supermarket chain is spearheading efforts to significantly reduce plastic waste. This initiative is expected to save an estimated 22 tonnes of plastic each year, underlining its commitment to environmental responsibility.
Available in all stores and online, the new packaging encompasses Sainsbury’s diverse range of super concentrated laundry detergents, including tropical, bio, non-bio, colour, and lavender variants. The cartons, which are 35% lighter than their plastic counterparts, are easily recyclable either at kerbside or recycling banks. Beyond the environmental benefits, this change will effectively remove 13 lorries from the road annually, contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions by 50%.
Aligned with the packaging shift, Sainsbury’s has also enhanced its laundry liquid formula. Now super concentrated, the detergent requires smaller quantities per wash, offering five additional washes per carton. This improvement not only supports resource conservation but also enhances customer value and convenience.
This strategic move is part of Sainsbury’s broader sustainability goals, which include halving the usage of own-brand plastic packaging by 2025. Recent initiatives reflect this commitment, such as the introduction of a one-litre refillable handwash pouch crafted with 85% less plastic, saving 28 tonnes of plastic annually. Similarly, the switch from plastic to aluminium coffee pods will eliminate over 10 million pieces of plastic each year.
Sainsbury’s initiative exemplifies its dedication to sustainability and innovation, setting a benchmark for the industry.
