Radical Forge, a game development studio based in Middlesbrough, has successfully secured £2.6 million from the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II (NPIF II). This financial injection is set to facilitate the creation of 15 new positions within the company. The funding, managed by Mercia Ventures, aims to support Radical Forge in undertaking larger projects and introducing its latest game, “Southfield,” early next year.
The company originated in 2017 by two computer games graduates from Teesside University, Bruce Slater and Freddie Babord, and currently employs approximately 70 individuals. Over the years, Radical Forge has contributed to influential games such as “Gang Beasts,” “Sea of Thieves,” and “Zombie Army 4,” showcasing their expertise in the industry. Its proprietary games, including “Bright Paw,” which won acclaim as the Best Puzzle Game at the NYX game awards, underscore its creative capabilities.
With newly secured funding, Radical Forge aims to maintain its vibrant company culture while expanding its team. CEO Bruce Slater expressed immense satisfaction, highlighting the potential for growth and continuation of their work culture. This funding marks Radical Forge as the second Middlesbrough studio receiving such support, following in the footsteps of SockMonkey Studios.
Mercia Ventures representative Chris McCourt acknowledged the potential for Radical Forge to attract top talent while other industry leaders are downsizing. This presents a strategic opportunity to enhance their skills base, take on more complex projects, and amplify Middlesbrough’s position in the gaming industry.
The NPIF II fund, valued at £660 million, aims to drive economic sustainability across Northern England by empowering small to medium-sized enterprises. Radical Forge’s funding aligns with such objectives, promising significant contributions to the local economy.
The substantial funding from NPIF II heralds a phase of expansion and opportunity for Radical Forge, reinforcing Middlesbrough’s growing influence in the gaming sector.
