Allan Leighton has been appointed as the executive chair of Asda. This marks a notable shift in leadership as Leighton steps into the role previously held by Lord Stuart Rose. Leighton, who served as Asda’s CEO from 1996 to 2001, rejoins the company with a wealth of experience in leading consumer businesses both in the UK and internationally, including positions at Loblaw Companies and as chairman of The Co-op.
Lord Rose, who has been chair since 2021, will remain on Asda’s board to ensure a smooth transition before stepping down. His tenure has helped shape Asda into a retailer with a strong presence across various retail formats. Rose expressed his confidence in Leighton, highlighting his extensive experience and leadership capabilities that will greatly benefit Asda going forward.
Gary Lindsay, managing partner at TDR Capital, the majority shareholder of Asda, thanked Lord Rose for his impactful contributions over the past three years. Lindsay underscored Leighton’s understanding of Asda and his ability to guide the company towards future opportunities, pointing out the substantial investment of £3.8 billion by shareholders to expand Asda’s footprint and enhance its market standing.
The investments have led to a significant increase in Asda’s store count, growing from 623 to 1,200 stores and food-to-go sites through both organic growth and strategic acquisitions. Additionally, Asda has successfully launched a loyalty app, which now boasts six million active customers, contributing to over half of the company’s total transactions. Leighton expressed enthusiasm about returning to Asda, describing it as a special endeavour and committing to enhancing the company’s appeal to both colleagues and customers.
Allan Leighton’s return to Asda heralds a new phase of strategic growth for the retail giant.
