The BBC has launched its New Voices scheme, aiming to discover the next generation of sports commentators. This initiative is designed to provide unique training opportunities from the UK’s leading sports broadcasting service.
Rising sports commentators stand to gain from the expertise and experience offered by the BBC as they embark on their journey. Clare Thomas, a notable example from the 2021 cohort, highlighted the transformative impact of the programme: ‘As someone with a background in production, but fairly new to broadcasting, the New Voices scheme was the perfect catalyst – and something for which I’m hugely grateful.’
The programme offers unmatched resources, including one-on-one sessions with seasoned professionals and exposure to top-tier sporting events.Such interactions provide invaluable feedback and insights, significantly accelerating the learning curve for participants.
The BBC’s commitment to nurturing talent is underscored by the words of Alex Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport, who stated: ‘Our sports coverage wouldn’t be the same without our incredible commentators. Whether it’s cricket, football, rugby, tennis or athletics, the voices that tell these stories are imperative to bringing the action to life.’
Aspiring commentators are asked to submit a one-minute commentary of their chosen sport. This should capture a pivotal moment such as a goal, try, point, or basket. Applications are welcome from UK residents aged 18 and above, who must detail their name, date of birth, and county of residence.
The deadline for submissions is the 20th of December 2024, with notifications for the next stage sent out by early February 2025. Successful applicants will then engage in discussions with BBC Sport experts, potentially paving the way to roles on prestigious platforms such as BBC 5 Live.
The New Voices scheme is a significant opportunity for emerging sports commentators to advance their careers with the BBC’s comprehensive training.
