The BBC has launched the application window for its £1 million Small Indie Fund for the 2024/25 period, targeting small independent production companies with turnovers of less than £10 million. The fund aims to bolster creativity and provide financial support, especially to diverse-led companies and those operating within the Nations and English regions.
This year, the BBC is increasing its financial investment per company, narrowing the focus to a smaller group of companies. This shift allows for a more personalised approach, offering both business and commissioning mentors to help these companies grow and maximise their content’s value.
In the previous year, the fund supported 57 small companies, 44 of which had at least two leaders from underrepresented groups, with 38 based outside London. The 2022/23 cycle saw support extended to 48 companies, over half of which had diverse leadership and 79% were located in the Nations and English regions, notably boosting support in the North East and Midlands.
Noteworthy commissions from past cohorts include ‘Dreaming Whilst Black’ from Big Deal Films and ’24/7 Pet Hospital’ from Twenty Six 03 North East. Access to the fund is managed through an annual application process, which is currently open until the end of December 2024.
Eligible companies include scripted production firms across the UK and unscripted producers in Scotland, Wales, and England. Unscripted indies in Northern Ireland are catered to by a separate Hot House scheme, ensuring tailored support across different regions and needs.
The BBC’s initiative continues to empower small independent production firms, fostering diverse creativity across the UK.
