Aldi’s Kevin the Carrot, crafted by McCann, has been officially recognised as the United Kingdom’s most cherished Christmas advertisement, according to a study conducted by innovation consultancy Spikes for Campaign Magazine. The survey gathered perspectives from over 4,000 UK consumers and highlighted the ad’s appeal through its humour and engaging storytelling, as well as its ability to entertain audiences with fresh narratives each year.
While John Lewis has an impressive presence, securing seven spots in the top ten, the quality of Kevin the Carrot won over the respondents. This ad was appreciated for injecting a sense of fun and joy, showcasing the effectiveness of a recurring, charming character in attracting viewers annually.
Coca-Cola’s renowned Christmas Trucks campaign took the second spot, admired for its ability to evoke a sense of joy through its classic jingle and festive scenes, despite some recent decline in reception due to its AI-driven rendition.
John Lewis’ 2016 advertisement, Buster the Boxer, placed third. Viewers loved this ad for its humour and ‘infectious joy’ encapsulated by a dog joyously rebounding on a trampoline. Such adverts are remembered fondly for the simple delight they bring to viewers.
The top ten Christmas advertisements, as ranked in the study, also featured various other memorable campaigns primarily from John Lewis, including ‘Man on the Moon’, ‘Bear and Hare’, and ‘Edgar the Dragon’. These ads are notable for their creativity and widespread audience appeal.
Kevin the Carrot’s triumph underscores the power of engaging storytelling and beloved characters in advertising.
