In a significant development for Salford, plans have been submitted for a £250 million data centre aimed at boosting the city’s technological standing. This centre is planned for a strategically located six-acre industrial site near the Salford Community Stadium, in the Eccles area.
The application, put forth by DLD (Salford) Ltd, highlights the potential for job creation and the attraction of new businesses to the area. Should approval be granted, the existing car sales and storage structures on the site will be demolished to make way for a modern data hall and accompanying offices.
The proposed data centre is described by its proponents as a crucial physical storage facility for digital data, underscoring its role in supporting every facet of contemporary life, from basic internet usage to advanced technologies like artificial intelligence.
The project’s planning documents emphasise the necessity for the UK to enhance its data centre capacity significantly, reflecting the rapid technological advancements globally.
Philip Kaye, co-founder of Manchester data centre company Vespertec, remarked on Greater Manchester’s growing reputation as a hub for data centre companies. He noted the region’s rapid development, citing recent major projects such as Kao’s data centre and the government’s heat reuse initiative in Stockport.
Kaye expressed confidence in Manchester’s readiness to meet the increasing demand for digital infrastructure, praising the area’s skilled workforce and successful implementation of innovative projects.
If approved, the Salford data centre is poised to significantly impact the region’s digital infrastructure capabilities.
