- These workers often experience physical strains like back and foot pain due to their active roles.
- Employers are urged to implement safety measures to reduce physical strain and ensure worker wellbeing.
For many in the UK, maintaining an active lifestyle during work hours is a challenge, especially for desk-based roles. However, for non-desk-based workers, constant movement is a norm. This group averages nearly 10,393 steps per day at work, significantly more than the average Brit’s 3,500, as per NHS data.
This high level of activity over a career can lead non-desk workers to accumulate approximately 98,626,942 steps, or about 44,175.95 miles – a distance that equates to encircling the Earth twice. Altro’s survey of over 500 non-desk-based UK workers reveals that 76% believe this physical activity positively impacts their mental health.
Despite these perceived benefits, non-desk-based workers report significant lifestyle compromises and physical discomforts. Sixty percent skip recreational activities due to exhaustion, with 51% leaving social events prematurely. A notable 76% also neglect adequate hydration, while 70% rely on caffeine. Moreover, 62% skip meals due to work demands.
Physical wellbeing issues are also prevalent. Eighteen percent reported taking time off due to work-related pain or injuries. Frequent back pain is experienced by 55%, while 48% suffer from foot pain. Nearly a quarter have faced slip or trip accidents at work.
Employers, therefore, hold a responsibility to mitigate these issues by adopting safety technologies and features in the workplace. With adequate measures, the physical strain can be minimised, ensuring a safer working environment for all.
Employers must address the physical demands on non-desk-based workers to ensure their well-being and safety.
