- Parents report high satisfaction with nursery support, aiding children’s confidence and independence.
The Busy Bees initiative, launched nationwide, focuses on supporting early toilet training to help reduce nappy waste by an estimated 26%. Over 400 nurseries in the UK and Ireland are participating, aiming to assist both parents and children in achieving successful toilet training at a younger age. This program is designed to equip nursery practitioners and parents with the knowledge and tools needed to identify when a child is ready to transition out of nappies.
The initiative incorporates a variety of engaging activities, such as games and songs, aimed at making the toilet training process enjoyable for children. By focusing on vocabulary and play, as well as enhancing communication with parents, it seeks to ensure that the transition is smooth and effective.
Busy Bees conducted research with nearly 500 parents, finding that 79% of them believed they received valuable support during the toilet training process from nursery staff. Moreover, 45% of the parents noted that their children transitioned out of nappies earlier as a result of the support provided. Parents highlighted the significance of conversations with nursery practitioners and advice on readiness signs as particularly helpful.
Despite the success, some parents remain apprehensive about the toilet training process. The initiative addresses these concerns by providing comprehensive support and resources, which are said to play a crucial role in aiding children’s independence and confidence—key elements in preparing them for school. According to NHS statistics, toddlers typically use 6-8 nappies daily across the UK, amounting to three billion nappies annually. Therefore, the environmental impact of this initiative is significant.
Deena Billings, European Quality Director and Safeguarding Lead at Busy Bees, emphasised the importance of this developmental milestone, particularly post-pandemic, as delayed toilet training has become more common. With their extensive experience and specialists, Busy Bees has developed strategies to educate and inspire both parents and practitioners in recognising readiness signs and assisting children more effectively.
In addition to the positive environmental and financial impact, the initiative encourages open communication about toilet training readiness between nursery staff and parents. Kelly Maskell from Busy Bees East Malling underscored this point, noting that specific activities and displays have initiated beneficial conversations with parents, allowing for tailored advice and the sharing of non-verbal cue recognition.
The Busy Bees initiative proves instrumental in promoting early toilet training and reducing nappy waste, benefiting families and the environment.
