Establishing and running a small business in the UK presents numerous challenges, particularly for those balancing family life. A recent study reveals that certain UK cities excel in offering an environment conducive to both entrepreneurial success and family wellbeing, assessing eleven factors such as rent costs, green spaces, and educational facilities.
London takes the top spot as the most favourable city for business owners with families, providing an impressive array of 724 activities for children, 181 playgrounds, 168 entertainment centres, and 92 sports camps, despite the higher rental and utility expenses typically associated with the capital.
Belfast ranks second, distinguished by 44.52% of its area being green spaces, including parks and community gardens. The city’s safety index of 53.69 further establishes it as a nurturing location for both business ventures and family growth.
Leeds captures the third position, noted for its robust educational landscape, offering 169 schools and 170 nurseries. The city’s green space, covering 41.90%, complements its educational offerings, making it an attractive choice for families.
Liverpool, though fourth, stands out by providing the most affordable rental rates among the top ten at £815.62 per month, an advantage that supports both business expansion and family needs.
Newcastle upon Tyne is highlighted for its superior safety score of 61.97, creating a secure environment for both business activities and family life.
Commenting on the findings, Corin Camenisch, Product Marketing Lead at SumUp, remarked: ‘Balancing the demands of running a business while raising a family is no easy task. We conducted this study to highlight the UK cities that can offer a great environment for both small businesses and families to thrive.’
These findings offer valuable insights for entrepreneurial families seeking a supportive UK city environment.
