Aldi has achieved a pivotal milestone by obtaining approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its emissions reduction targets. This places Aldi among other leading UK supermarkets such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s in having their sustainability commitments validated by a global climate authority.
The Aldi South Group, encompassing Aldi UK, is dedicated to ambitious near-term goals, including reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Scopes 1 and 2 by 52% by 2030, compared to a 2021 baseline. Additionally, it targets a 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions from a 2022 baseline.
Looking towards the future, Aldi has set long-term objectives to decrease absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2035 and cut Scope 3 GHG emissions by 90% by 2050. These commitments underscore Aldi’s dedication to achieving net zero emissions throughout its value chain by mid-century, with validation from SBTi.
Aldi plans to reach these ambitious goals by implementing a variety of initiatives aimed at reducing carbon output. This includes targeting significant emission sources within its stores and logistics operations. Simultaneously, Aldi is enhancing its efforts to decrease Scope 3 emissions by collaborating with suppliers on improving on-farm practices and optimising upstream transportation systems.
Liz Fox, Aldi UK’s National Sustainability Director, commented on these developments, stating that the revised targets reflect the company’s deep commitment to sustainable operations both in the UK and internationally. She emphasized the importance of sustainability to Aldi and its customers, noting the potential for substantial impact due to the company’s international scale.
Aldi’s SBTi-approved targets highlight its commitment to significant carbon emission reductions by 2050.
