From 30 October, Aldi will implement new labels on fresh chicken packaging, elevating its commitment to poultry welfare by increasing space for chickens beyond industry standards.
To further its dedication to animal welfare, Aldi has announced the introduction of new packaging that highlights changes in stocking density for fresh chickens. These changes entail a notable 20% increase in space compared to current industry norms, a move that aligns with Aldi’s ongoing efforts to prioritise humane treatment of animals. This initiative echoes earlier steps taken by the supermarket, such as the discontinuation of caged hen eggs in August, achieving a cage-free status significantly ahead of schedule.
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating, ‘Animal welfare is of paramount importance to us, and we’ve been working hard with our suppliers to reduce stocking density to help us improve the welfare conditions for chickens. We’re proud that from next week, we can offer our customers access to higher welfare chicken at our unbeatable Aldi value.’
This decision places Aldi among other supermarkets committed to animal welfare improvements. In March, Lidl also declared its intention to enhance chicken welfare by expanding space for its own-label fresh chicken by 20%, exceeding current industry standards. These efforts by leading supermarkets paint a broader picture of the growing recognition and action towards improved animal welfare practices in the industry.
Aldi’s latest move to enhance poultry welfare with increased stocking space demonstrates the retailer’s commitment to animal welfare, setting a commendable example for the industry.
