Aldi accelerates its commitment to sustainability by converting a significant portion of its HGV fleet to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuels.
- Over 30% of Aldi’s heavy goods vehicles will transition to this eco-friendly fuel, reducing emissions significantly.
- This strategy is set to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 15,400 tonnes of CO2e annually.
- The potential full-scale adoption across Aldi’s fleet could result in a further 55,100 tonnes of CO2e reduction each year.
- Aldi’s sustainability director emphasises this move as a critical milestone in achieving long-term environmental goals.
Aldi, a prominent retailer, is making substantial strides towards environmental sustainability by converting over 30% of its fleet of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to run on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuels. This initiative targets more than 160 HGVs stationed at its Cardiff, Swindon, and Neston distribution centres. By implementing this change, Aldi expects to lower its carbon emissions by around 15,400 tonnes of CO2e annually.
The decision to use HVO fuels aligns with Aldi’s broader objective of reducing its carbon footprint. Should this eco-friendly initiative extend across Aldi’s existing fleet of over 550 HGVs, it could further decrease carbon emissions by an additional 55,100 tonnes of CO2e each year.
Liz Foz, the national sustainability director for Aldi, remarked that the transition to HVO fuels reflects the company’s dedication to its long-term environmental strategies and carbon reduction commitments. She highlighted this step as a ‘significant milestone’ in their ongoing efforts to enhance positive environmental change within the business.
In a related development earlier this month, Aldi announced its largest annual investment initiative, committing £800 million towards expediting its expansion within Britain. This comes as Aldi experiences a notable increase in sales and profits, with its sales rising by £2.4 billion to reach £17.9 billion, marking a 16% surge in growth for the year leading up to December 2023.
Aldi’s adoption of HVO fuels underscores its ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing sustainability within its operations.
