In a strategic move to advance its sustainability agenda, Asda has announced the development of two new bio-liquefied natural gas (bio-LNG) refuelling stations. This initiative forms part of the supermarket chain’s broader efforts to decrease carbon emissions across its operations.
The company is collaborating with Gasrec, a leading commercial vehicle fuel producer, to establish these new facilities in Warrington and Dartford. This development increases Asda’s network to 13 operational bio-LNG stations, emphasising its commitment to renewable energy sources.
Currently, Asda operates a fleet of over 780 vehicles, marking it as the largest operator of LNG-powered trucks in the United Kingdom. John Rogerson, Asda central fleet operations manager, remarked on the significance of this initiative: ’LNG trucks are currently the leading alternative fuel option for operators like ourselves and with over 780 LNG vehicles, we operate the largest fleet of LNG fuelled trucks in the UK.’ His statement highlights Asda’s role as a leader in sustainable logistics.
This shift to bio-LNG is critical to Asda’s goal of accelerating decarbonisation and achieving net-zero operations by 2040. As part of this strategy, the supermarket achieved a 41% reduction in operational carbon emissions in the previous year, compared to the levels in 2015, and aims for a 50% reduction by 2025.
Additionally, Asda launched a sustainability-linked enhancement to its Supply Chain Finance scheme in partnership with HSBC UK, reinforcing its commitment to environmentally responsible practices.
Therefore, Asda’s investment in renewable refuelling infrastructure not only supports its operational efficiency but also underscores its forward-thinking approach towards sustainability.
