Asda has announced the extension of its partnership with Too Good To Go, the world’s largest surplus food marketplace. This collaboration will see the introduction of a food redistribution programme across nearly 1,000 sites starting from September. This expansion reflects Asda’s commitment to reducing food waste through innovative partnerships.
The scheme will be available across a diverse range of locations including traditional supermarkets, Asda Express stores, and foodservice sites within Asda premises such as Leon, Greggs, Sbarro, and Subway. This broad coverage ensures a wide reach to Asda customers.
Through this initiative, customers can purchase ‘Surprise Bags’ via the Too Good To Go app for £3.30. These bags contain food items worth at least £9, encompassing a variety of products such as chilled items, ready meals, bakery items, and produce nearing its use-by date. This presents an economically savvy opportunity for consumers while addressing food waste.
The bags sold from different outlets like Asda Express, Leon, and Greggs will vary in price based on their content. They may include breakfast, lunch, and dinner items, along with cakes and pastries. This variety further enhances the appeal and flexibility of the programme.
The decision to expand follows a successful trial period wherein Asda managed to save over two million kilograms of food from being wasted since the partnership’s inception in 2021. Sam Dickson, Asda’s vice president for commercial strategy, operations, and own brand, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership’s expansion, highlighting its role in reducing food waste.
This move is part of a series of initiatives by Asda aimed at sustainable food management. It complements the supermarket’s ‘back of store’ food donation scheme launched in June, which introduced a collaboration with FareShare and Olio, adding 680 donation slots across its network. These efforts are central to Asda’s strategic priorities in sustainability and efficient resource management.
The expansion of the partnership between Asda and Too Good To Go signifies a significant step towards enhanced sustainability and resource management in the retail sector.
