The Co-op has launched a new 24-hour online grocery delivery service, targeting city centre stores in Leeds, London, and Manchester. This initiative is designed to address the growing demand for grocery deliveries at unconventional times, reflecting changing consumer habits and expectations.
In collaboration with delivery partners Deliveroo, Just Eat, and Uber Eats, Co-op ensures that customers can access groceries around the clock. This strategic move enables Co-op to increase its market share in the expanding quick commerce sector, emphasising speed and convenience.
Furthermore, Co-op has expanded its online shopping services across more than 1,600 stores according to their existing operating hours. This expansion allows customers more flexibility to shop later in the evening, meeting the needs of those with busy or varying schedules.
Studies from Co-op indicate that over 40% of quick commerce consumers expressed an interest in using an 11pm to 5am delivery service if it were available. This interest rises notably among individuals aged 18 to 44, with particular popularity among Gen Z consumers, of whom 52.3% are keen on this late-night service.
Co-op’s E-commerce Director, Chris Conway, commented on this development, saying, “Meeting the needs of our member-owners and customers is at the heart of our approach.” He highlighted how societal shifts, including more flexible working hours and lifestyle changes, have increased the demand for convenient, non-traditional delivery times.
Currently, the grocery chain estimates that over 80% of the UK’s population can access its products, whether through its own online platform or through partnerships with delivery services.
Co-op’s new service exemplifies their commitment to adapting to consumer needs and capturing a significant share of the quick commerce market.
