The Allders department store in Croydon, a significant historical structure, is about to undergo a substantial transformation. The project, approved by Croydon Council, has entrusted the redevelopment to Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW), a renowned developer and operator. It aims to breathe new life into the building while conserving its historical essence, maintaining the store’s long-standing connection with the community.
Founded in 1862, Allders was a well-loved establishment until its closure in 2013 when it entered administration. Despite its doors being shut, the building has remained a landmark of cultural and historical importance in Croydon. The newly approved plans seek to honour this legacy by making minimal alterations to its facade while introducing modern amenities.
The development plan includes the establishment of five retail units ranging from 450 sq ft to 1,300 sq ft, alongside two food and beverage outlets, each occupying 450 sq ft. This endeavour represents the first phase in a comprehensive scheme to rejuvenate the area. It is anticipated that the new shops and eateries will enhance local engagement and commerce.
Penny Cameron, head of UK development at URW, articulated the company’s vision, stating, “This is the first step of many in our plan to revive this much-loved Croydon landmark, bringing Allders back into use as a space the community can enjoy, while preserving its heritage.” Such restorative efforts are crucial to maintain the balance between development and conservation in urban planning.
The Mayor of Croydon, Jason Perry, expressed his support, highlighting the sentiment of pride among residents and businesses towards the Allders building. The plans aim to rekindle a sense of place that aligns with the town’s historic character and aspirations.
The restoration of the Allders building signifies a promising step towards rejuvenating Croydon’s historic town centre.
