In a bid to tackle the growing concern over single-use plastic waste, Ocado and the UK Refill Coalition have expanded their Reuse range to include laundry essentials.
From today, customers can purchase Reuse Non-Bio Liquid Detergent and Reuse Clear Skies Fabric Conditioner, both in 2.7-litre reusable packaging. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Refill Coalition to develop packaging solutions that mitigate the environmental impact of single-use items, with the ultimate aim of transforming customer shopping habits.
Ocado’s introduction of these laundry products follows the successful launch of pasta and rice in reusable containers earlier this year. These products have garnered positive feedback, achieving an impressive 4.9-star rating for pasta and 4.8 for rice from online reviews, with every customer recommending them. The Reuse range now claims nearly 30% of sales in comparison to traditional single-use packaging items, highlighting the growing consumer shift towards sustainable shopping.
Research conducted by Ocado Retail and Savanta underscores a significant public demand for reducing single-use plastics in groceries. Approximately 72% of surveyed individuals express concern over waste generated from single-use packaging, and about one in three are inclined to choose retailers offering refillable alternatives for pantry staples. Moreover, a significant proportion of consumers advocate for supermarkets to provide refillable options for essential items such as liquid laundry detergent and fabric conditioner.
With the rising return rate of reusable containers, it is evident that consumers are becoming more conscious of their environmental impact. The momentum in adopting such sustainable practices is indicative of a broader trend, which is expected to continue as awareness grows and more supermarkets adopt similar initiatives.
This expansion of the Reuse range signifies a progressive step towards sustainable consumption in the retail sector. As consumer preferences evolve, the commitment of retailers like Ocado to offer environmentally friendly options is vital in reducing single-use plastics and promoting long-term ecological benefits.
