Sainsbury’s has taken a significant step by unveiling its inaugural airport store at Edinburgh Airport, aligning with a broader effort to enhance passenger amenities.
The newly established convenience outlet is strategically placed before the security checks, boasting multiple entrances to cater to travellers at all times. Operating 24 hours a day, this store aims to accommodate passengers from both arriving and departing flights, offering uninterrupted service throughout.
Customers can find a diverse range of products including meal deals, freshly baked bread, cakes, fruits, vegetables, meats, and fish. Additionally, the store features a unique section dedicated to Scottish delicacies, promoting locally sourced products.
An innovative Click & Collect service has been introduced, empowering customers to pre-order items online from Sainsbury’s, alongside offerings from Habitat and Tu Clothing, for convenient collection at the airport.
This venture is part of Sainsbury’s larger strategy to extend its reach, adding to its 100 existing locations across Scotland. Managed by a team of 26 colleagues, the store integrates a partnership with Neighbourly, facilitating food donations to local charities, thereby reinforcing its commitment to community support.
Richard, Sainsbury’s director of property, procurement and EV Ventures, expressed enthusiasm about the new setting, noting, “We’re very excited to launch Sainsbury’s Local in a whole new setting for the first time today with the opening of our Edinburgh Airport store.” He highlighted the success of previous travel hub stores and mentioned plans to explore further airport locations across the UK.
The opening reflects a broader trend amongst leading UK supermarkets to expand their convenience store networks, making substantial investments in real estate to appeal to local consumers.
As Sainsbury’s opens its first airport location, it not only enhances convenience for travellers but also sets a precedent in the evolving landscape of retail spaces, marking a milestone in its expansion strategy.
