Frasers Group has made a strategic move by acquiring the Frenchgate Shopping Centre in Doncaster, further solidifying its presence in the UK retail market. This expansive shopping destination covers over 770,000 square feet and hosts more than 120 retailers, including popular names like Next, H&M, and TK Maxx. It draws an impressive annual footfall of over 16 million visitors, making it a prime location for retail business.
With this acquisition, Frasers Group aims to unlock new opportunities for its various brand fascias, such as Sports Direct, Everlast Gyms, Frasers, and Flannels. A major transformation is planned for their presence in the centre, with the Sports Direct outlet set to expand more than threefold to exceed 35,000 square feet. This revamped space will also house USC, Game, and Evans Cycles, offering an enriched shopping experience.
While the financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed, the deal comes on the heels of Frenchgate’s previous listing for £35 million on the commercial property platform LoopNet. The acquisition aligns with Frasers Group’s recent strategy of expanding its brick-and-mortar footprint, following similar purchases of The Mall in Luton and the Overgate centre in Dundee earlier in the year.
Michael Murray, CEO of Frasers Group, emphasises the company’s commitment to revitalising high street retail in the UK. He stated, “The acquisition of Frenchgate Shopping Centre in Doncaster further demonstrates the Group’s commitment to investing into brick-and-mortar. We are committed to re-inventing retail and injecting new life into high streets across the UK to bring the very best brands, environment, and experience to customers across the country.” Frasers Group was assisted in this acquisition by CBRE, a professional property advisory firm.
The Frenchgate acquisition marks another significant step in Frasers Group’s strategic plan to transform UK retail landscapes.
