Harrods has made a significant move towards sustainability with the release of its first annual Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report covering from February 2023 to January 2024. This report not only marks a milestone for the renowned department store but also outlines its current achievements, ongoing initiatives, and future sustainability goals.
The document reveals a 2.4% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2022 levels. This reduction is an essential step in Harrods’ commitment to decreasing its carbon footprint and enhancing its environmental responsibility.
Among the innovative programmes highlighted, the installation of solar panels at the Thames Valley distribution centre stands out. These panels now supply 41% of the facility’s annual power requirements, showcasing Harrods’ investment in renewable energy sources.
Additionally, the introduction of a beauty recycling scheme underscores the store’s dedication to circularity. This initiative facilitates recycling in the beauty sector, aligning with Harrods’ broader sustainability objectives.
Equally crucial is the newly introduced Community Pillar strategy. By partnering with various charities, Harrods aims to empower global communities, reflecting a broader social commitment alongside environmental efforts.
Michael Ward, Harrods’ managing director, presented this report as a pivotal first step, emphasising the necessity of prioritising sustainability across the business, supply chain, and planet. He stated, “I am proud to present Harrods inaugural ESG report, outlining how we operate as a sustainable and conscientious luxury retailer. It is an important first step, but we acknowledge that we still have much to do on our sustainability journey.”
Harrods’ inaugural ESG report is a promising start in its sustainability journey, yet much work remains ahead.
